John McCain’s statement on the Senate Floor in regards to Michelle Bachmann’s witch hunt

This is not the place were you would most likely expect to see John McCain get the acknowledgement he is due, but I feel it is very necessary today.

John McCain showed the decency and character that we should not only expect, but demand of our elected officials. This afternoon, Sen. McCain crossed party lines to denounce Rep. Michelle Bachmanns 21st Century version of McCarthyism.

From the Senate floor, McCain characterized Michelle Bachmanns attacks on Huma Abedin, Secretary of State Clinton’s top aide and wife for former Congressman Anthony Weiner by stating the Minnesota Republicans statements

are nothing less than an unwarranted and unfounded attack on an honorable citizen, a dedicated American and a loyal public servant.” (http://www.salon.com/2012/07/18/bachmann_under_fire/)

Michelle Bachmann is desperately in search of a them. John McCain showed a courage that few in his party have to stand up to this coward like attack designed to instill fear and loathing. America works best when we focus on protecting the ideal of “we”, not focusing on the distrust of “them”.

Maybe the question we should ask Michelle Bachmann is the same Army Chief Counsel Joseph Welch asked Sen. McCarthy in 1954:

Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?

I would think the answer is quite apparent, as it was with Sen. McCarthy. Actions like Joe McCarthy’s should remain in the annals of our history, not revisited today for political gain. With that said I would like to thank John McCain for doing the right thing for America, even if it was the wrong thing for his party.
