Class Warfare is not the term that I would use to describe the actions on the right. I believe that conservatives are portraying class indifference in their dealings with the middle and working classes. By ignoring the mere existence of the middle and working class needs, conservatives act like in the scheme of things nothing matters but tax cuts for their fictional job creators, deregulating the market into another fiasco and a broader tax base that does little to aid the middle and working classes. This indifference is the centerpiece of the impotence of 112^th Congress to fix our economic issues of the day.

The GOP and the Tea Party Republicans, there is a difference, at least in theory; are not overly concerned with the middle and working classes in this country. This is obvious from the rhetoric we have been seeing from the right. The only thing Republicans are concerned with is cutting entitlements, cutting taxes, deregulating the protections that were put in place to consumers from unscrupulous business practices, preventing the EPA from acting on global warming, limiting voters access to the ballot and restricting a woman’s access to planned parenthood and other health related services under the guise that they fund abortions. This is not job creation, like was promised when the tea party and other conservatives wooed voters in the 2010 midterms.

I do not feel that the motives of the right are racially motivated. I come to that conclusion due to the fact that I don’t think GOP legislatures are overly concerned with the needs of Caucasian middle/working class members. However, when it comes to restricting voter access to the ballots, I feel that it is all racially motivated. Voter suppression, redistricting and misleading flyers are all an attempt to prevent certain portions of the population access to the franchise. Republicans fearing minority voters has created an anathema against these populations. The greatest fear is that the United States ethnic diversity and rising non-Caucasian populations having easy access to polling locations will derail the conservative vision of America.

The indifference comes from the belief that the American worker is no longer viewed as a useful commodity to the conservative business model. The American consumer is still needed to a point; the worker however, is just too high maintenance. Tax cuts, unregulated markets, the so called broader tax base have little to do with assuaging the economic tensions of the middle/working classes. In many ways these actions increase tension in these classes. Economies are driven by consumers, not low taxes and unregulated markets. Consumers wanting access to products/services create jobs; jobs create more consumers driving more sales.

Livable wages are what the American workers need to succeed. We need corporations/businesses to care as much about creating good jobs to expand their markets as they care about shareholder returns and the bottom line. It is in the best interest of business, one would think, would be not only providing good jobs but wages and benefits that give purchasing power and security to the workforce. However, we are seeing emerging markets with lower labor costs. These lower costs are mighty tempting for many businesses. Many small businesses don’t have the means to use this lower cost, however, for larger businesses profits can go up by moving production and getting materials outside the United States. Many conservatives would say we must lower wage demands, lower benefits, taxes, regulations. Create a more enticing environment where profits can rise. However, this plan would lead to a race to the bottom for the American worker. This would help enable the indifferent attitude that conservative have with the American worker. Profits are important, yet, forgetting about the needs of a workforce to become viable consumers we will see never see the economic climate we need for success.

The failed past cuts, deregulation that we have seen from many conservative administrations on the state and federal level has left has in the economic jam we are in. By rejecting President Obama’s job bills, or any attempts to raise any revenues in any ways the GOP is saying no to the American workers chance to succeed. When it was the banks, Senator McCain (R-AZ) and Representative Paul Ryan (R-WI) were major factors in TARP and we saw swift actions. Now that it is the American people we see a complete lack of concern. The Republican Party has pretty much said, “the hell with you” to the American worker and middle class. We will stand by those who spend the most to contribute to our interests.
