Before I start on Recap of Day 3 I cannot forget to praise Preservation Hall. Last night it was like I died and saw Louis, my god it amazing. I closed my eyes during the trumpet solo on Figety feet and swear I heard Angels singing from the bell tones. I don’t think it should be legal to go to New Orleans without going to Preservation Hall. I can say, I truly know what it means to miss New Orleans.
Now onto Mississippi, where the George Carlin and Bill Maher inside me took over from the moment we crossed the border. I was rewriting the state motto within seconds, I can’t help it I mean I’m quite the sarcastic jackalope at times. I mean you can see the treason in their state flag.
My purpose of this article isn’t to rail about the Confederate flag, I already wrote one or two of those. The purpose of this diary is to acknowledge one of the most awe inspiring Civil War battlefields I have seen. That battlefield is Vicksburg and if it wasn’t for the oppressive heat I would have been able to take more of it in. However, I had a great time.
The view from the Federal Guns looking up at the Louisiana monument in the redoubts, the USS Cairo which was restored after being raised from the bottom of the Yazoo, the National Cemetery and the zig zagging Union trenches it was as if the history I’ve studied came alive. The Vicksburg campaign which came to an end on that second most important July 4th in American history was well worth the visit. I pray that one day I can return.
After Vicksburg we continued rolling north towards Memphis. Stopped in an amazing lil BBQ place in Ridgeland called Pigskin BBQ; boy was that brisket amazing. And now we are about 40 minutes from Memphis and I can’t wait till tomorrow. Memphis Zoo, Graceland, Lorraine Motel and rendezvous for some BBQ. Each day is more blessed than the previous.
