The more and more I hear Mitt Romney speak, the more I ask myself if he actually believes the words that are coming out of his mouth.

From telling college students to borrow 20,000 dollars from their parents for college (instead of federally subsidized loans), to telling a group at the villa (private golf course, lake and mansion) of papa johns pizza founder that “republicans want everyone to live like this”, to claiming President Bush and Obama should have let Detroit go bankrupt and allow hundreds of thousands of middle class jobs to disappear (and now that his plan was the plan that saved Detroit). It makes me wonder where is the integrity, or character of Mitt Romney.

I’m not a Republican, so not even one of the many super pacs vying to purchase the election, thanks to the citizen united decision will be able to sway my vote. My faith, ideology and aspirations are definitely left of center, but I still must ask will Mitt Romney stand up for anything recognizable in the center as a relatable quality.

I realize that growing up in privilege has created a vast disconnect for Romney, but many of our greatest leaders in American history came from privilege and were still able to connect with the vast majority of Americans. Wealth and privilege didn’t stop Teddy Roosevelt from taking on the monopolies, FDR from offering a new deal, JFK from pushing back against the Southern Democrats on civil rights. These men of privilege understood that the American people wanted someone to fight for all of them, in spite of what was popular, but to advance what was right.

Most Americans can’t afford to loan 20,000 dollars to their kids for college. My parents had to pay 800 a month through Tuition Assistance, I worked several campus jobs in which my entire paycheck was deducted toward tuition and I still owe 50,000 in stafford loans.

Many Americans have accepted their destiny is not their own villa. I am a state correction officer, my parents were both teachers, my wife is a licensed social worker. Like a majority of middle class Americans, we are not in careers where billions are on the horizons. But, that doesn’t make us unsuccessful.

Many American know Mitt Romney was against saving Detroit, and that he will change his tune on any matter under the sun to appease those in attendance. My mind just can’t grasp how someone who is such a flim flam artist, so transparent in his lack of honesty can be the presidential nominee of a major US political party.

Grover Norquist and many on The Right just want a “vessel” to push an ultra conservative agenda and erase nearly 90 years of progress. America doesn’t need a vessel under the command of a helmsmen bent on ideological perfection.

The people of the United States need a leader who will stand up to all and whether or not their actions are popular, stand up and show the conviction that the dignity of the American people come first, not some of the American people, nor most, but all. And I for one, could never see Mitt Romney as that leader.
